Our Mission
The mission of the department is to educate graduates who possess fundamental geographical knowledge and are capable of producing, processing, evaluating, and managing data related to the natural and human environment using geographic information technologies.
Our Vision
The vision of the department is to become a continuously developing department that is among the top choices with the quality of its education, training, and research; that conducts studies aimed at solving the problems of our country, primarily those of our province and region.
History
The Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Balıkesir University, was established in 1998. The department began offering education in the 1999–2000 academic year and graduated its first students in 2003. The department includes five main academic divisions: Physical Geography, Human Geography, Regional Geography, Geography of Turkey, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). However, undergraduate education is conducted through a common departmental program. The department currently has 5 professors, 4 assistant professors, 1 research assistant with a PhD, and 1 research assistant working full-time. There is a Physical Geography Laboratory, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory, and a Geography Department Seminar Room within the department. The seminar room also houses the department's library. The department also offers master’s and doctoral programs through the Institute of Social Sciences.
