Geography Department Hosted an Event on "Recognition of the Geography Profession, Its Impact on Employment, and Graduate Studies & Academia"
The Department of Geography organized an event titled "Recognition of the Geography Profession, Its Impact on Employment, and Graduate Studies & Academia" on 9 June 2026 to support students in planning their professional and academic careers. The event featured Muhammet Can Çalış, a PhD student, as the invited speaker and was attended by 26 students from the department.
During the event, a comprehensive presentation was delivered on the career opportunities available to Geography graduates and the sectors in which they can be employed. The speaker also discussed the recognition of the professional title "Geographer" by the Vocational Qualifications Authority (VQA) and emphasized its significance in enhancing the profession's visibility and expanding employment opportunities for graduates.
The second part of the program focused on graduate education and academic career pathways. Students were informed about master's and doctoral programs, academic research processes, career opportunities in academia, and the professional and academic advantages offered by graduate studies.
Drawing on his own educational and research experience, Muhammet Can Çalış shared valuable insights into academic life, the requirements of graduate education, and the challenges encountered throughout the process. The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students had the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance on topics related to their future careers.
